‘London Bill’ fished with spinners off some Villaricos rocks and caught bonito and meagre to 7lbs.

Six members of the ‘Albox Fishing Club’ fished the Indalo Hotel arm, between them they fished 12 rods and caught 18 fish, including a wrasse, a horse mackerel, two weavers and 12 or so combers, all fish were caught on raw prawn.

‘Captain Pete Pugwash’ went out with his wife Sally and they had a few fish including a scabbard fish and a forkbeard. There were lots of big fishing jumping weighing up to 30 to 40lbs, Pete says they looked liked tuna. Pete and sally also saw a big sunfish but it wasn’t Nessie.

I joined Pete on his Garrucha moored boat a couple of days later and it was a poor day for results although it was nice to see three sunfish, the big one did look like Nessie size wise. We also saw a lot more fish jumping and I agreed with Pete the majority looked like tuna but one must have been close to 100lbs as I clearly saw it 300 yards away. We trolled in and out of Garrucha marina using three different lures but with no takes. I also saw what I believed to be a Atlantic amberjack come clear of the water landing on its side, no doubt getting rid of lice.We only caught a few fish, pandoras and combers but I did lose a big conger (I believe it was) when three quarters of the way to the top it tied a knot in my wire trace I haven’t seen since my navy days, a lanyard it looked like, couldn’t have tied it better myself!

‘Cuba Brian’ took the Mazzaron (Anglers Together Club) boys out for a morning and it proved to be another tough morning with only a few fish being caught but at least one angler broke his duck and has caught a fish!

See photos of ‘Yorkshire Mike’ and a scabbard fish and one of ‘Farmer Rory’ (Right) and ‘Yorkshire Phil’ (Left) with a couple of pandoras.

‘Baza Barry’ is staying close to home and fished Lake Negratin where he caught carp and barbel. His best carp was a 12lber taken off the top with floating bread crust, good summer bait for sure.

The venue for this week’s Rods and Reels match was the Embalse de Argos at Calasparra. The water level was still very high, not allowing the use of all the old pegs. The fishing again last week was poor, in terms of the weights that normally win matches here. Still, at this time of the year, the pegs that are producing are the deep water pegs. Although the day before the match there had been some heavy rainfall, they were lucky with the day’s weather as they had no rain, but as said before, they paid for that with the fishing.

1st Clive ( Golf no more ) Cleghorn fishing the pole using tares with 43.5lbs.

2nd Bill ( The Master ) Reade fishing the pole using paste with 39.5lbs.

3rd Dave ( Yours Truly ) Hoare fishing the pole using paste with 33.5lbs.

For last week’s Abbey Angling match they travelled to Argos Embalsa. Once again they have had a lot of heavy rain by the look of it, the water levels were higher than seen them in nine years in Spain. This in turn is keeping the water temperatures low and also the water is clear with little algae bloom.

On this water fish always seem to feed better when the water is coloured, at the moment with the high water out of the nine pegs on the match stretch only four are fishable.

Best baits on the day were paste and corn.

1st Lenny ( Ex Cultural Attaché) Bolton with 65.5lbs on pole with paste.

2nd Stan (The Man) Roberts with 60.5lbs with the pole up in the water for Barbel using hemp.

3rd Terry (Swing Em) Screen with 33lbs on the pole with paste.

Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters.

Meetings are held in two locations on the second Friday and Saturday of each month. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about.

The next meeting is on Saturday 9th of July at 12 o’clock the meeting will be held at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, opposite the sea-front between Isla Plana and the Port. (Mazzaron)

The Albox Fishing Club meet every two weeks on a Wednesday, the next one being the 22nd June at the Azafran Bar.
