Ho! Ho! Ho! And a very Merry Christmas to all! Now that’s a classic line that we’ve heard throughout
the years. As the Christmas and New Year season has come and gone, you’d think Mojácar with its’
micro-climate would be attracting the cold weathered visitors by the dozens.
Alas, as many people may have noticed, especially the business community, visitors or tourists, are a rare breed these days. In fact, I’m not seeing very many residents venturing out to frequent local merchants. The streets appear to be quiet … morning, noon and night.
I recall saying in the first article I wrote that while we may not want this to become another Benidorm, we surely want the area to grow and prosper. The fact is, no one is out spending money or even frequenting local businesses except for necessary items like groceries etc. I was visiting the local market in Mojácar on a recent Sunday and heard many vendors remark how this season was way down for them and on that particular day while there were plenty of people or potential shoppers walking and looking, they simply were not spending. Hmmmm!
We’re used to seeing many restaurants and bars that traditionally close for the winter and not re-open
until the spring. But this year, we’re seeing many others close simply because there is no
business or people out spending money. And more importantly, with the mild winter weather
(sunny and blue skies, warm enough to go without a coat but cool enough to take along a
sweater or jacket and for many, definitely not warm enough to take a dip in the sea), can
anyone tell me why there are no tourists visiting the area! Quite frankly, Mojácar seems
like a ghost town … not a creature stirring, not even a mouse. On a positive note, the
Christmas decorations throughout the city were abundant very pretty. If only there were
people around to enjoy them! Bah! Humbug! Well on to entertainment matters!
